Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School (PKUSZ) - School of Environment and Energy 2025 Graduate Admissions Prospectus for Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Students

Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School (also known as Southern Yanyuan), leveraging Peking University's resources and based in Shenzhen, has gradually become an international research campus deeply rooted in Shenzhen and a crucial component of Peking University's strategy to build a world-class university. Adhering to the educational principle of "Frontier Fields, Interdisciplinary Studies, Applied Academics, International Standards," and guided by the development concept of "Problem-Oriented, AI-Driven, North-South Collaboration, Innovative Integration," the School of Environment and Energy, one of the five science and engineering schools at PKUSZ, focuses on key strategic needs such as national ecological civilization construction, carbon peaking and neutrality, and the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It prioritizes the development of disciplines such as Atmospheric Environmental Science, Water Environmental Science and Engineering, Environmental Technologies for Pollution Reduction and Carbon Mitigation, Big Data for Smart Environmental Energy, Mangrove Forest Conservation and Ecological Restoration, and welcomes applicants with backgrounds in environmental science, biology, chemistry, materials science, geography, hydrology, computer science, and related fields.

II. Learning Mode and Duration

The duration of master's degree programs is 2 or 3 years, and the duration of doctoral degree programs is 4 or 5 years.

III. Application Qualifications

Applicants must be permanent residents of Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan, and their identity documents must meet one of the following conditions:

For applicants from Hong Kong and Macao, they must hold ① a Hong Kong or Macao permanent resident identity card and ② a Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents or a Hong Kong and Macao Resident Residence Permit (Note: Holders of a Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents (Non-Chinese Citizenship) do not meet the application criteria of this prospectus).

For applicants from Taiwan, they must hold ① a valid proof of residence in Taiwan and ② a Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents or a Taiwan Resident Residence Permit.

Applicants from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan must meet the following academic requirements:

Applicants for master's degree programs must hold a degree equivalent to a mainland (mainland China) bachelor's degree.

Applicants for doctoral degree programs must hold a degree equivalent to a mainland (mainland China) master's degree. Among those admitted to master's degree programs, applications for direct admission to doctoral programs after one year of enrollment are allowed, with specific selection times, quotas, and methods governed by the "Regulations on the Cultivation of Direct Master-to-Doctoral Degree Candidates at Peking University," the "Notice on the Selection of Direct Master-to-Doctoral Degree Candidates for 2025 at Peking University" (available on the Peking University Graduate School website), and relevant regulations on direct admission to doctoral programs of the respective departments.

Applicants must possess good moral character, physical and mental health, comply with the laws and regulations of the People's Republic of China, and meet certain requirements in academic performance and language proficiency.

Applicants must provide written recommendations from two scholars with associate professorships (or equivalent titles) or higher in relevant fields.

IV. Application Procedure

From 8:00 AM Beijing Time on November 15, 2024, to 12:00 PM on January 8, 2025, applicants can apply online at the Peking University Graduate Admissions Website (URL: https://admission.pku.edu.cn/applications/). Detailed application procedures are outlined in the "Peking University 2025 Online Application Announcement for Graduate Degree Programs for Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Students (Main Campus)."

Applicants must complete the online application process within the specified time, including filling in personal information, uploading photos, filling in application forms, confirming volunteer choices, uploading application materials, and paying the application fee.

Application materials must be submitted (mailed) to Room E206B, School of Environment and Energy, Peking University, Xili University Town, Nanshan District, Shenzhen, by January 12, 2025. Materials will not be returned after receipt.

The foreign language proficiency requirements for doctoral applicants refer to the "Application-Assessment System" admissions instructions of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering (URL: https://admission.pku.edu.cn/zsxx/bszs/bsyxym/index.htm).

For master's applicants, at least one of the following proofs is required: ① CET-4 score of 500 or above (taken after September 1, 2020); ② CET-6 score of 425 or above (taken after September 1, 2020); ③ TEM-4 or TEM-8 certificate (taken after September 1, 2020); ④ GRE score of 300 or above (taken after September 1, 2020); ⑤ TOEFL (IBT) score of 90 or above (taken after September 1, 2023); ⑥ IELTS (Academic) score of 6 or above (taken after September 1, 2023); ⑦ Other proof of foreign language proficiency equivalent to the above scores, with validity periods and passing standards determined separately.

Dissertation (current students can provide abstracts and directories of their dissertations), published academic papers, and other original research achievements (if applicable).

Completed and signed Peking University 2025 Application Form for Master's/Doctoral Degree Programs (downloaded and printed after online application completion).

Copies of valid identity documents (for Hong Kong and Macao applicants, copies of ① Hong Kong or Macao permanent resident identity card and ② Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents (excluding non-Chinese citizenship) or Hong Kong and Macao Resident Residence Permit; for Taiwan applicants, copies of ① valid proof of residence in Taiwan and ② Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents or Taiwan Resident Residence Permit).

Copies of degree certificates (current students should provide proof of enrollment; those holding foreign degree certificates must also submit an "Overseas Education Credential Evaluation Report" issued by the China Scholarship Council).

Original or notarized copies of official transcripts from the applicant's graduation institution.

Personal statement (briefly introducing one's academic background and emphasizing the study and research plans for pursuing a graduate degree, approximately 1500 words for master's applicants and 3000 words for doctoral applicants; template download URL: https://admission.pku.edu.cn/zsxx/gatzs/gatzsjz/index.htm).

Two letters of recommendation from experts, sealed separately and signed across the seal by the recommending experts; template download URL is the same as above.

Proof of foreign language proficiency.

V. Application Fee

According to the requirements of national and Beijing municipal education authorities and relevant regulations of Peking University, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan applicants for master's and doctoral degree programs must pay the application fee online. The fee standard is the same as that for mainland (mainland China) students. The application fee for master's degree programs is 138 yuan per application, and for doctoral degree programs, it is 200 yuan per application. The application fee is non-refundable after successful payment.

VI. Assessment (Initial Review and Final Interview)

The department where the applicant applies will organize relevant expert panels to review the applicant's moral character, past academic performance, consistent performance, research capabilities, comprehensive qualities, and other aspects based on all materials provided, and select candidates for the final interview. The final interview generally takes place from March to April 2025, with the format and specific timing arranged by the department.

During the final interview, the department will conduct qualification reviews of applicants. Applicants must submit original copies of valid identity documents, original degree certificates (those holding foreign degree certificates must also submit an "Overseas Education Credential Evaluation Report" issued by the China Scholarship Council), and original copies of foreign language proficiency proofs. If the department has doubts about degree certificates or foreign language proficiency proofs, applicants must submit authentication reports issued by authoritative institutions as requested by the department. Those who do not meet the requirements will be disqualified from the final interview.

VII. Admission

The admission criteria for Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan students are the same as those for mainland (mainland China) students in the same programs. The university will conduct comprehensive evaluations based on the department's assessment results and publish a list of tentatively admitted students by the end of May 2025. If there are no objections to the public announcement, admission notices will be issued, expected to be distributed in late June 2025.
