The School of Environment and Energy (SEE) was established in 2009, evolving from the former School of Environment and Urban Studies at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School (PKU Shenzhen). SEE addresses major national strategic needs such as ecological civilization construction, carbon peaking and neutrality, and the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The school aims to build a new environmental engineering discipline focused on continuously improving resource efficiency, characterized by research on total material fluxes in rivers and oceans, and driven by interdisciplinary integration. SEE strives to create an innovation hub for pollution reduction and carbon mitigation technologies, integrating basic research, technological breakthroughs, market applications, and national strategic decision-making support. The school is dedicated to cultivating high-level, interdisciplinary talents who will lead future environmental technologies and industrial development, with a focus on areas such as river and marine ecological environments, pollution reduction and carbon mitigation technologies, and regional air pollution control.
The school has assembled a high-level, international teaching and research team of over 40 members, including 11 faculty members, 13 researchers, and 16 postdoctoral fellows, with 5 international staff members. The school currently has nearly 200 master's and doctoral students. Established research platforms include the National Environmental Protection Key Laboratory of Ozone Pollution Prevention and Control (Shenzhen), the Guangdong Provincial Engineering Research Center for Mangrove, the Shenzhen Key Laboratory for Urban Habitat Science and Technology, the Shenzhen Key Laboratory for Heavy Metal Pollution Control and Resource Recovery, the Shenzhen Engineering Laboratory for Algal Bioenergy Technology Development and Application, the Shenzhen Engineering Laboratory for Recycled Composite Environmental Materials, the Shenzhen Engineering Laboratory for Key Technologies in Solar and Wind Energy Seawater Desalination, the Shenzhen Engineering Laboratory for Energy Conservation and Carbon Reduction Data Platform and Analysis Technology, the Shenzhen Engineering Research Center for Nanoporous Water Treatment Materials, the Environmental and Energy Information Engineering Laboratory, the Rainwater Resources Laboratory, and the Shenzhen Blue Sky Project Atmospheric Super Station.
To better serve the implementation of major national strategies such as ecological civilization construction, ecological protection and high-quality development of major river economic belts, coordinated development of the GBA, and carbon neutrality, PKU Shenzhen and CFHEC(CCCC First Highway Engineering Company). jointly established the 'Research Laboratory Of Ecological Envronment And Resource Efficiency' in February 2022. This laboratory focuses on areas such as soil and water environment management, ecological restoration, sustainable management of major rivers, and urban ecological civilization construction. It is committed to addressing bottleneck issues related to emerging pollutants, new environmental materials, renewable resources, green energy, and advanced environmental protection equipment. The laboratory actively conducts research on resource efficiency, environmental protection and management, comprehensive monitoring of ecological elements, regulation of total material fluxes in rivers, integrated watershed management, and coordinated pollution reduction and carbon mitigation. It effectively promotes the cultivation of innovative talents in the field of ecological environment and supports the implementation of national and regional development strategies.
