Biography

Dr. Ke YU is currently an assistant professor at the Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, Shenzhen, China. He obtained his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 2014. Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Yu embarked on a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California at Berkeley before establishing his independent academic career at Peking University in 2016. He has also served as senior editor in Microbiome journal, a top journal in the field of Microbiology since 2024.

Dr. Yu’s primary research focuses on discovering previously unknown microorganisms inhabiting extreme environments, particularly in non-marine saline aquatic ecosystems. He is devoted to harnessing the potential of these microorganisms for various applications within the field of environmental engineering. In pursuing this goal, Dr. Yu also dedicates his efforts to advancing meta-omics methodologies to identify, enrich, or culture novel microorganisms. His efforts have resulted in:

1) The development of novel metagenomic algorithms, databases, pipelines, and protocols designed to identify rare or low-abundance microorganisms present in extreme environments.

2) The creation of meta-omics analysis methods tailored to guide the enrichment or isolation of specific microorganisms and the manipulation of microbial communities.

Since 2007, Dr. Yu has published 80+ journal papers in Nature Communications, Microbiome, Environmental Science & Technology, Water Research, Applied Environmental Microbiology and npj Biofilms & microbiome, among others. with over 5000 citations. Since beginning his independent academic career in 2016, he has successfully applied for fifteen research grants, including two NSFC grants, as the PI. The total approved funding for his research amounts to over 8.0 million RMB.
